Bianca Ojukwu To Become APGA Leader

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) may have been effectively brought under control yesterday in Abuja, Daily Sun can authoritatively report. Crisis had engulfed the party immediately its national leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu was buried in March last year as stakeholders asked the National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh to restructure APGA.

The party was subsequently broken into factions as a result of alleged refusal of Umeh to restructure. Governor Peter Obi led one faction nd the other by Umeh.

The two factions still have cases pending in courts. But with the Anambra election scheduled for November fast approaching, Umeh declared chairman by the Appeal Court in Enugu and the Obi faction heading for the Supreme Court, Daily Sun gathered that Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, who was in the forefront of reconciling the two factions, intensified his efforts.

Daily Sun further gathered from a source that was privy to series of meetings of the APGA chieftains in Abuja, the efforts of the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) paid off. It was gathered that Uwazuruike met with Governor Obi, Umeh, Bianca Ojukwu and other prominent members of APGA in an undisclosed venue in Abuja where they agreed that Umeh should remain as national chairman to conduct the Anambra elections.

Also the gathering agreed that Ambassador Bianca would step into the shoes of her late husband as new APGA leader. Daily Sun also scooped that Umeh and Governor Obi would be meeting with Uwazuruike in Owerri next week to sharpen the new peace achieved.

Rise Of The Feminist Wedding

~No veils, no engagement ring - and don't DARE try to give me away
~Brides are increasingly shunning traditions surrounding weddings
~Choosing not to have engagement rings or wear white on the day
~Almost a quarter plan to keep their maiden name after marriage
~19% agree aspects of traditional weddings are 'anti-feminist'
~But 76% still want to be walked down the aisle by their father

The image of a veiled bride walking down the aisle on her father's arm could become a thing of the past as a growing trend for 'feminist weddings' has been detected among modern brides to be.

Doing away with the engagement ring, choosing not to be 'given away like property' and wearing a colour other than white are key themes gaining traction in the feminist wedding trend.

The findings, revealed in a survey of 200 brides to be, revealed that almost a quarter of women planned on keeping their maiden name after marriage, while one in 10 were planning to wear a colour other than white on their wedding day.

Traditions such as the wearing of an engagement ring are also increasingly being rejected by brides who feel it is anti-feminist - with such an obvious token to be worn on the finger marking the woman in question as 'taken'.

Court Stops PDP’s Planned Convention

An Abuja High Court has ordered the Peoples Democratic Party not to proceed with its planned national convention.

The ruling was given by Justice Suleman Belgore on Thursday.

The judge refused to restrain the PDP national chairman, Bamanga Tukur; the financial secretary; and the national auditor from continuing with their roles.

He, however, ordered all the other acting members of the National Working Committee to stop their official duties.

The ruling implies that the PDP only has three members of the NWC and the Jerry Gana Committee appointed to conduct a fresh election at its congress scheduled for August must stop work.

'Civilian JTF' Burn Suspected Boko Haram Member Alive In Maiduguri

Borno youths who go hunting for suspected Boko Haram insurgents are said to have set ablaze a sect member in Dikwa, south east of Maiduguri yesterday.

Volunteer Vigilance Youths Group (VVYG) otherwise known as ‘Civilian JTF’ has been operating in Maiduguri and environs for quite some time now, tracking down and arresting suspecting sect members, and then hand them over to security forces.
Our correspondent gathered that members of the VVYG, which operate along Ngala road in Maiduguri, yesterday raced to Dikwa, once capital of Kanem Borno Empire, where they caught up with the suspect.

The vigilantes claimed the suspect had confessed that he alone had killed more than 70 people.
They said many of those killed were their loved ones and that they had, therefore, vowed to fish him out wherever he goes or enters.

One of the youths who participated in human bonfire said: “We left Maiduguri for Dikwa town purposely to fish out; that Boko haram member who killed our fathers and cousins and then fled to Dikwa town to hide. And when we reached the town, apart from him, we caught 19 other sect members who ran there to hide. We succeeded in bringing them back to Maiduguri, and then we suggested handing over the 19 suspects to the soldiers while our main target would remain with us for a special punishment he deserves because many of us were sorrowfully aggrieved with him; he killed many people in our area when they (Boko Haram members) were strong, and we couldn’t do anything then. But now he has entered his victims’ hands. When we decided to burn him, we just bathed him in fuel and set him on fire to die in presence of all the orphans and widows whom he had caused to suffer. So, what we did to him is minor compared to the evil he did to all of us. Though some of us have even suggested punishments worst than burning but the majority of us emphasised on setting him ablaze, that was why we agreed to just burn the evil Boko Haram sect member who killed our loved ones.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Free-Kick Breaks Boy's Wrist In Friendly Match

Not intentionally, of course, but the Portuguese superstar hit the headlines on Wednesday morning after it emerged that his wayward free kick during Real Madrid's friendly against Bournemouth at the weekend left one fan nursing a broken wrist.

11-year-old Charlie Silverwood was at Dean Court for the Cherries' pre-season friendly against the Spanish giants, and was delighted to have scored seats right behind the goal.

Six minutes in, however, his prime seats proved to be a liability as a Ronaldo free kick - struck at full power from 35 yards - dipped over the goal and smashed young Charlie on his left arm.

The shot left his wrist broken in two places, but the brave Bournemouth fan refused to leave the ground to get medical help - and no wonder, considering the outrageous ticket prices.

"I could see the ball coming towards me. It curled past the post and was going to hit my face — so I had to block it with my hand," Charlie told The Sun, before going on to explain that his dad, Lee, could have stepped in to stop the injury happening.

The Managing Custodian, Hall of Grace Awards, Rupert Ojenuwa, disclosed this during a briefing in Lagos.

You know Nigeria is passing through a lot of challenges that could threaten our collective but despite this; we know that Nigeria is not as bad as portrayed and that a lot of people are actually working very hard to make things better.

Yobe Governor Shuns Minister Over Al-mustapha Rally

Yobe State Governor Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, Tuesday, refused to grant audience to the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, following the minister’s rally with the recently released Major Hamza Al-Mustapha in Nguru last week.

The minister was in Damaturu to give the state government 222 trailer loads of grains and N150 million being the Federal Government’s assistance to Yobe as one of the three states affected by emergency rule.

But the governor, who was at the Government House but refused to see the minister, was, according to an aide who does not want his name in print, annoyed that the minister drove in the same car with Al-Mustapha to the Nguru rally despite the emergecy rule in the state.

All efforts to speak to the governor’s media aide was futile as our reporter’s calls were unanswered. A text message sent to the aide was not also acknowledged by the time of going to press.

Meanwhile, the federal government’s ‘largesse’ was a source of controversy as the state deputy governor, Engr Danlami Ali, who hosted the minister, claimed he was mystified over claims by the minister that he “personally sourced N200 million from individuals and organisations to transport the grains to Damaturu.”

CHAN Qualifier: Cote D'ivoire Vs Nigeria Tomorrow At 4:30pm

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has asked for total concentration from his players ahead of their final African Nations Championships (CHAN) qualifier against Cote D’Ivoire in Abidjan on July 27. He noted that the match will be like war against their West African neighbours.

Nigeria won the first leg in Kaduna 4-1 and need to avoid defeat by more than three goals in order to qualify for their first participation in the competition that will hold in South Africa next year. The team commenced training on Tuesday at the artificial pitch of the Fifa Goal Project site in Abuja with 23 players as Sunshine Stars captain Godfrey Oboabona was exempted due to his exertions at club. It was reported last week that the defender suffered a slight injury when he was mobbed by fans in Owo during training.

“The win in Kaduna is history and if you have been following the media you will see that they have been making remarks that they can also beat us well. We must be ready for their antics and forget the past,” said Keshi.

Keshi has invited four new players, including one defender, one midfielder and two strikers, in line with a pledge to inject a few new faces following last Saturday’s opening leg win at the Ahmadu
Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
The new faces are Kwara United defender Ganiyu Ogungbe, Kano Pillars midfielder Rabiu Mohammed, and strikers Abdullahi Gero of Enugu Rangers and Osadinye Joseph of Warri Wolves.

Scientists Implants False Memories In to Mice

False memories have been implanted into mice, scientists say.

A team was able to make the mice wrongly associate a benign environment with a previous unpleasant experience from different surroundings. The researchers conditioned a network of neurons to respond to light, making the mice recall the unpleasant environment.

Reporting in Science, they say it could one day shed light into how false memories occur in humans. The brains of genetically engineered mice were implanted with optic fibres in order to deliver pulses of light to their brain. Known as optogenetics, this technique is able to make individual neurons respond to light.

Our memory changes every single time it's being recorded. That's why we can incorporate new information into old memories and this is how a false memory can form...” Dr Xu Liu Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Just like in mice, our memories are stored in collections of cells, and when events are recalled we reconstruct parts of these cells - almost like re-assembling small pieces of a puzzle.

It has been well documented that human memory is highly unreliable, first highlighted by a study on eyewitness testimonies in the 70s. Simple changes in how a question was asked could influence the memory a witness had of an event such as a car crash.

When this was brought to public attention, eyewitness testimonies alone were no longer used as evidence in court. Many people wrongly convicted on memory statements were later exonerated by DNA evidence.

Xu Liu of the RIKEN-MIT Center for Neural Circuit Genetics and one the lead authors of the study, said that when mice recalled a false memory, it was indistinguishable from the real memory in the way it drove a fear response in the memory forming cells of a mouse's brain.

Islamic Organisation's Position On Child Marriage

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), a Non Government Organisation, has called for tolerance on the controversy concerning child marriage. MURIC’s Director, Ishaq Akintola, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan.

The statement said that in conformity with the tenets of Islam, age was not part of the conditions which must be met before marriage could be solemnised. It said that where the bride was a ‘minor’, Islam prescribes protective solemnisation of marriage to shield the bride from abuse.

“This means that the girl who is deemed to be of tender age is left untouched by the man until she attains puberty. “Another major condition for child marriage is that the girl herself has the right to repudiate the marriage when she attains maturity if she does not like her spouse. “MURIC believes that honourable and dignifying child marriage is better than child prostitution which is rampant in Nigerian cities and red light zones,’’ it said.

The statement compared the globalisation and promotion of homosexualism, lesbianism and same-sex marriage as a direct challenge to God’s divine order. The Senate, on the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee, rejected the deletion of the clause on renunciation of citizenship.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, said that the clause was recommended for deletion because it was considered discriminatory. He said the clause, which had been in the Constitution since 1979, had nothing to do with child marriage as was being insinuated by some Nigerians.

But before Monaco even begins their Ligue 1 campaign, their newly-prized asset is already at the center of a damning storm.

A recently published Colombian report questions whether or not “El Tigre" is truly 27 years old as documented by FIFA records, and not two years older as an old civil registration form would suggest.

The report adds that the player’s place of birth is Colombia’s capital Bogota, not San Marta, as originally believed.

He described the traits displayed almost simultaneously while selling on the highways as misused skills.

The governor said there is nowhere in the world where youths dominated the highways with such entrepreneurship skills.

He said: “I have travelled a little bit and I am not sure if there are many places in the world where we will find young people, running through traffic, balancing their wares on their heads, chase the moving cars and selling their goods, calculating how many they have sold and doing mental sums and giving you change.

“If you just pause to think on the skills displayed, the flexibility and adaptability that is required to carry out those functions. I don’t know how many of us can do it.

“So, let nobody come and tell me that Nigerians are not skillful, let them not also come and tell me that they are not enterprising. If that is not a display of skills and a display of enterprise then you know what it is.”

Power Minister Says Nigerians Now Enjoy 16 Hours Of Electricity Supply

The Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo has appealed to those involved in vandalism to desist from such acts or face appropriate sanctions.

Mr Nebo who spoke at the ministerial platform in Abuja said the activities of vandals has served as a setback towards the provision of steady power supply to the affected areas.
While stressing that power supply in the country has improved to 16 hours per day, the minister said that the federal government will focus on the expansion of renewable energy and also fast track its plan of rural electrification.

He highlighted the growing  havoc vandals are doing to prevent a realisation of the power reforms agenda of the administration.  He said the incidence of vandalism of electricity equipment has gotten to that level that except drastic action is taken to contain the menace, the much-touted reform of the power sector may be no more than a dream unrealised.

The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company in recent times has claimed to have lost many distribution transformer substations under its network to these vandals. The increasing rate at which its equipment were being vandalised had reached unacceptable proportions.
Unfortunately, this is a common trend across the country as managers of the DISCOs make strenuous efforts to cope with equipment vandalism which indeed has become the major obstacle facing the company in the South-East geo-political zone.

NLC Threatens To Join ASUU Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has threatened to join the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in solidarity strike if the Federal Government failed to address the ASUU demands.
NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar, made the threat at the opening ceremony of the “2013 Rain School” in Uyo. “We call on the Federal Government to have meaningful dialogue with ASUU with a view to implementing the agreement.

“The state governments should equally obey the law and pay minimum wage to teachers and the local government workers as well as the 27.5 per cent teacher’s enhanced salaries. “Should these strikes persist, workers of Nigeria will not hesitate to join them in solidarity,” he stressed.

Omar said the modules of the rain school were designed to train members of affiliate unions and state councils of the NLC. “This is in order to equip them with necessary skills to empower and protect their rights at workplace.”

He said that the theme of the 2013 Rain Schoolwas imperative due to the obvious violation of workers’ rights in the workplace and in the larger society. FG Approves 40 Firms For Q3 Petrol Importation

The Federal Government has given approval to 40 companies to import 3.4 million tonnes of petrol in the third quarter of the year, according to a report by Reuters.

However, it reported that the list of fuel suppliers included companies previously named in the subsidy fraud investigation, but that large global trading houses have been left empty-handed.

“The list showed four companies that failed to cooperate with parliament’s probe were named as suppliers. These were Nepal, Fresh Synergy, Ibafon and Techno, which the parliamentary report showed collectively claimed subsidies of nearly $60m,” the report said.

“Nepal’s website lists its CEO as Ngozi Ekeoma, who has twice been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in relation to fraudulent subsidy payments. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Phone calls to her company went unanswered,” Reuters added.

“At least three other companies awarded third quarter allocations – Masters, Matrix and MRS – were also ordered to account for their shipments or refund falsely claimed subsidy money in another government report released last June,” the report said.

Agreement With ASSU Can't Be Implemented - FG

Agreement with ASUU can’t be implemented, says govt

A DECLARATION that is likely to infuriate the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and further aggravate the on-going industrial action by the union has come from the Federal Government Tuesday in Abuja when it said that the agreement reached with ASUU is impossible to implement by its nature.

However, it was quick to express his optimism of finding a way out of the quagmire soon.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chukwuemeka Wogu, made this known when he appeared before the People Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) Tuesday  to render his achievements as a minister, appointed under the platform of the ruling party.

Wogu, who was briefing the Bamanga Tukur-led committee at the Wadata Plaza National Secretariat of the PDP made the relative industrial peace and harmony being enjoyed over a long time in the country, employment and job creation, social security and improvement in the national minimum wage and its implementation as vital highlights of his performance.

He told the PDP national chairman and his members of committee that he met on ground an agreement signed by the previous government with ASUU when he resumed as the Minister of Labour, but stated that the agreement is impossible to implement.

Some People Are Plotting To Destabilise Bayelsa - Governor Dickson

There is a plot by some persons within and outside Bayelsa State to destabilise the state, the governor, Seriake Dickson, has said.

The governor stated this in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson.

He alleged that “the plan is being spearheaded with the active support and collaboration of some desperate politicians and their collaborators from neighbouring states who do not mean well for the state.’’

Mr. Iworiso-Markson said that the plan involved embarking on a sponsored mass street protest as part of a campaign of calumny and propaganda against the state government.

“In recent times, we have seen deliberate attempts by this group of desperate power seekers sponsoring some gullible graduates to take to the streets. They were also behind the recent protest staged by pensioners in the state.

“It is sad to note that they are now on a planned mission to incite unsuspecting youths to take to the streets to protest against the state government,” he said.

Confessions Of First Female NDA Cadets

Global rating places Nigeria as the 23rd of 188 nations advancing the emancipation of women. The rating was the reason President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and the President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, who were guests at the launch of the book – Goodluck Jonathan: Champion for Women on June 26, hailed Jonathan’s passion for womanhood, especially for appointing 13 female ministers to his cabinet.

Two years ago, Nigeria admitted the first set of female Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) cadets. That opened the door for women to train as full time professional and combatant military officers. During the book launch, the 20 ladies, the first batch of female NDA cadets attended and made military displays that depicted them as strong and competent as their male counterparts in the course.

The ladies turned up in their army ceremonial dress and others in military fatigue. There were seen as just lady soldiers who were part of the crowd. It was after some time that many recalled they were the first batch of female NDA cadets after 49 years of the academy.

The ladies gave the audience a snippet of what is their daily routine at the academy back in Zaria. On the Commandant’s order, those in fatigue went straight on the floor and had 20 push ups without running out of breath to the admiration of the audience, including President Jonathan. This definitely was the highlight of the event.

Ekiti PDP Suspends Fayose

The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Mr Makanjuola Ogundipe, resurfaced in the state capital on Tuesday and announced the suspension of a governorship aspirant of the party, Mr Ayo Fayose, and three members of the state executive committee of the party.

The members of the state executive whose suspensions were also announced by Mr Ogundipe are the secretary of the party, Mr Tope Aluko; the publicity secretary, Mr Kola Oluwawole and the women leader, Mrs Busola Oyebode.

Ogundipe, who addressed newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, expressed regret over the invasion of the party secretariat, describing it as “unfortunate and highly regretted,” and added that the state working committee of the party “after a careful study and thorough investigation” decided to suspend the people.

He said: “The transformation agenda of the Federal Government under our leader, President Goodluck Jonathan, will not be allowed to be rubbished by anybody, no matter how highly placed. Senate Denies Endorsing Child Marriage Law

The Senate has defended its decision to retain a controversial section of the constitution that seems to support child marriage, asking Nigerians to be calm and understand that the section has nothing to do with marriage, but instead citizenship.

The Senate said Nigerians had nothing to fear as it will never support child marriage, a subject at the centre of the controversy over Section 29, subsection 4(b) of the constitution.

That section details guidelines for a Nigerian to renounce his or her citizenship. Part of the law says the person must be at least 18 years. But if the person is a woman and married, the section continues, she shall be deemed to be “of age”.
An attempt by the Senate last week to deletethe second definition having to do with a married woman, as part of its ongoing constitutional amendment, failed after a member, Ahmed Yerima, claimed it was un-Islamic.

The failure has sparked intense public anger, one of the most sweeping, against a decisionby the National Assembly in years.
Nigerians have called for a reversal of the decision that will see the section deleted, saying retaining the provision, which has been in place since 1979, gives backing to child marriage and other abuses.

“This has nothing to do with child marriage; we will never support child marriage,” said Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who heads the review committee, said.
Mr. Ekweremadu deplored how even a “respected national daily” communicated wrongly to Nigerians that the section in question stipulates that the Senate was proposing to reduce the minimum year of consent from 18 years to nothing.

“This, as you are aware, is totally untrue,” hesaid on Tuesday.
The Senate said its effort at removing that section from the constitution in the first place was not informed by marital consideration, but that it was intended to maintain gender equality by making sure anything that grants separate guidelines for men and women, was deleted.

“In doing its work, the Senate committee on the review of the 1999 constitution went through the constitution to fish out and recommend for amendment other provisions such as Section 26(2)(a) and Section 42(1) deemed to be discriminatory against Nigerian citizens,” said Mr. Ekweremadu.
He said the section can still be revisited sinceconstitution review is continuous

Pope Francis To Forgive Twitter Followers' Sins Online

That moment when someone re-tweets your sin

Pope Francis has revolutionized the Roman Catholic Church in many ways and now he's going after the world of social networks. It has been announced through the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary publication that the Pope may forgive sins through Twitter, to encourage those that cannot afford to see him in Brazil to follow him through the TV or Internet.

The official announcement will be made next week during the World Youth Day 2013, which will take place in Brazil July 23-28 with the presence of millions of young people around the world. The initiative is to give "collective forgiveness" only to the Pope's followers on Twitter that have previously confessed their sins, have been absolved by a priest and have attended Mass. They may tune in the World Youth Day broadcasts and receive special papal indulgence, which can reduce the time a soul spends in purgatory.

According to iEnterate.com, many theologians have criticized the measure because it "distances the person of the priest, the only mediator between God and man," said one Vatican analyst. "You do not get an indulgence as you get a coffee from a machine," said Archbishop Claudio María Celli, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

"It's not enough just to watch a mass online or follow Pope Francis via live streaming on your iPad or by connecting to Pope2You.net. These are just devices. What really counts is that the tweet that the Pope will send from Brazil or the photos from World Youth Day produce genuine spiritual fruit in the heart of the person," said Celli.

Recent Pictures Of Accident Along Ibadan-Lagos Expressway

I was coming from ife today, just after we passed Ibadan, we got to the scene of an accident that just happened between a bus and a trailer that was parked by the roadside. The commercial bus which was fully loaded with passengers was coming with a high speed when it ran into the trailer. I learnt nobody in the bus survived the accident aside a lady who was rescued with fatal injuries. Seeing Frsc bringing out school bags from the bus, one can only guess that students were also in the bus. The two mechanics that were working under the trailer were also killed. May God save us in this country.

Nigerian Players Banned For Life For Match-fixing Scandal

Players and officials of clubs involved in two Nigerian promotion play-off games that ended 79-0 and 67-0 have been banned for life.

Plateau United Feeders were 79-0 victors over Akurba FC while Police Machine FC demolished Bubayaro FC 67-0. The four clubs have been banned from the game for 10 years.

A Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) committee recommended that match officials involved in the two matches should be given life bans.  Plateau United Feeders and Police Machine went into the matches level on points, with promotion to the lowest tier of the Nationwide League Division at stake.

Feeders scored 72 of their goals in the second half, while Police Machine reportedly scored 61 times after the break in their game. The results meant that Plateau edged above Police Machine on goal difference.

The NFF said in a statement: "The NFF have accepted the recommendations and they would be communicated to the clubs, the state FA's, CAF and FIFA. "We will publish all the names of players and officials with their photographs and details."

Lyrics of Nigerian and Foreign Songs Compared

I must state categorically that I am not trying to belittle our local musicians or badmouth them. But we often compare our local movies with the foreign ones and I think it's about time we compared our local artistes with the foreign ones. We'll do this by comparing the thing that matters most in any song which is the lyrics. I have two songs that I want us to compare: It will rain by Bruno Mars and Gobe by Davido. These are supposed to be two "love songs", but at the end of the day you'll see which one is truly a love song grin

If you have both songs in your phone, just plug in your earphones and listen to the songs while you read the lyrics. I'm sure you'll have a better idea of what I'm saying.

It Will Rain by Bruno Mars

If you ever leave me baby,
Leave some morphine at my door
‘Cause it would take a whole lot of medication
To realize what we used to have,
We don’t have it anymore.

There’s no religion that could save me
No matter how long my knees are on the floor
So keep in mind all the sacrifices I’m makin’
Will keep you by my side
Will keep you from walkin’ out the door.
