Buckingham Palace confirmed Monday morning that the Duchess of
Cambridge, Kate Middleton, went into labour between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.
British time. A new bulletin released at about 8:30 a.m said the birth
was “proceeding naturally.”
Queen Elizabeth will be the first to hear the news from William on an encrypted telephone line.
The baby will then be announced to the world.
Kate
and her husband, Prince William, arrived unseen at the private Lindo
Wing, Paddington, with William apparently at the wheel, rather than a
police escort. However, there is a large uniformed police presence at
the hospital.
Now, the final wait for a baby that will be third
in the direct line of succession to Queen Elizabeth begins. When
Princess Diana gave birth to William 31 years ago in the same ward, her
labour took 16 hours. It is generally thought that first births take
longer for a new mother than they do for mothers having the second
child.
