LASUTH Successfully Carries Out First Corrective Ear Surgery.

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) department and The Cochlear Foundation, University of Freiburg, Germany have successfully carried out the first corrective surgery in two people with severe hearing problem in Lagos.
The Cochlear Implantation is a hearing device implanted into a deaf patient’s ear through surgery. The device is said to convert sound into impulses which enable the patients to hear and understand.
The mission, according to the Chief Medical Director, Profesor Adewale Oke, is another feat in the hospital’s quest to provide excellent health for the people of the state.
Professor Oke also reiterated that the surgery would, to a very large extent, improve self-esteem and build social confidence in patients who had as a result of loss of hearing isolated themselves from societal engagements.
In his own remark, the Chairman, LASUTH Board, Dr Olatunde Williams, said that Freiburg University and LASUTH had found a lasting solution to a long standing problem through Cochlear Implantation in deaf people
