Five new cases of Ebola and a second death from the disease have been
confirmed in Lagos. Nigerian officials say that a nurse who treated
Nigeria’s first Ebola patient, Patrick Sawyer, two weeks ago died on
Tuesday.
The new cases are all health
workers who treated Sawyer, a Liberian-American who was en route from
Liberia to the Nigeria for an economic development conference. They are
all in isolation in a Lagos hospital.
“We need to work with each state government to establish isolation
wards in readiness for any eventuality,” Onyebuchi Chukwu, Nigerian
Minister of Health is reported to have said.
According to VOA News Chukwu says the government is establishing a
24-hour-a-day Ebola command center. It is also working to prepare
hospitals around the country in case the disease spreads.
