The Nigerian Elections Debate Group
(NEDG) announced earlier this week that the two 2015 presidential
debates would be held on January 28th and February 5th. NEDG also said
that one vice presidential debate will be held on January 29th.
It was previously reported that NEDG is an independent
coalition of radio and television broadcasters, media, and civil society
groups. The group has come under fire by observers who claim it is
being organized by pro-Jonathan advocates.
NEDG Trustee Chairman, Sola Omole announced that Chief Raymond
Dokpesi, the Chair of Daar Communication Plc, would moderate the three
debates.
Presidential debates are a relatively new addition to Nigeria’s
political landscape with PDP candidate and incumbent president Goodluck
Jonathan apprehensive about participating in the 2011 presidential
debates, according to the Washington Post. Prior to the 2011
debates, the last debate was held in 1993. The time slots for these
events have not been announced at time of reporting
